Nestled in downtown Goleta, the Goleta Valley Community Center has long served as a multifunctional hub for community services, accommodating adult education, recreation, child care, and private school instruction. However, the passage of time had revealed structural vulnerabilities that posed potential risks to the facility’s occupants and its invaluable role in the community. To address these concerns, the City of Goleta embarked on a vital project – the Goleta Valley Community Center Seismic Retrofit. This initiative aimed to secure the structural integrity of the center, ensuring it can continue to provide a safe and supportive environment for a diverse range of community activities.
The Project:
Goleta Valley Community Center Seismic Retrofit
The Work
The project, which was successfully completed by our team, involved a comprehensive seismic retrofit of the Goleta Valley Community Center. Our responsibilities included the anchorage and strengthening of existing wood diaphragms and truss connections to the concrete walls, ensuring the structural stability of the facility. We meticulously removed the existing roofing down to the plank sheathing, followed by the installation of new structural sheathing and a roofing system to enhance the building’s resilience.
Furthermore, we repaired deteriorated wood elements, extended roof drains, and provided seismic bracing for non-structural elements. Throughout the project, we maintained close collaboration with City agencies and adhered to stringent safety measures. With dedication and expertise, we successfully completed this essential retrofit project within the specified Ninety (90) Calendar Days, reinforcing the Goleta Valley Community Center’s role as a safe and enduring community space.
